What to check before booking with children

A private pool is usually the reason a family chooses a villa over a hotel, and it is also the detail worth checking most carefully. Ask whether the pool is fenced or gated, whether it has a shallow end or a separate paddling pool, and whether the terrace around it is level rather than a step or two down from the garden. No amount of description replaces watching a young child in water yourself, but knowing the layout in advance means you are not discovering it on the first afternoon.

Choosing the right weeks for young children

Kalkan's height of summer runs hot through the early afternoon, which suits a lie in more than a toddler's nap schedule. Late May, June and September keep the midday sun gentler and the sea close to its warmest, and are often the easier stretch for a family with small children than the peak of July and August. A shaded terrace or a covered outdoor dining area matters more here than in a cooler month, so ask about shade when you compare villas.

Space that actually helps with children

A kitchen built for family cooking rather than the occasional dinner, a flat corner of garden for a travel cot, and bedrooms close enough together that a monitor reaches: these matter more day to day than an extra guest room nobody uses. If three generations are travelling together, our larger villas for groups and multigenerational villas add the separate living space a family villa alone may not. For the pool question specifically, our villas with fenced pools narrows the search further, and our pool safety checklist and family villa checklist cover what to verify before you commit. Patara beach, a short drive away, is flat and shallow enough for a family day out beyond the villa itself.
